Upcoming Events January 21st-Martin Luther King's Birthday, No School January 25th-Dessert Day January 30th-100th Day of Kindergarten What's Happening in the Tiger Classroom? I would like to welcome Tamarah to our classroom! Everyone has been so helpful to be welcoming and helping her to learn our classroom routines! We are back up to 23 students in our classroom. Our nurse, Mrs. Petrykowski wants to let all parents that dental exams are due by May 15th! A quick reminder that if your child wants to play in the snow, he/she needs hats, boots, snowpants, gloves/mittens and coats. Also, we have had large number of students coming in without daily snacks. I have a limited supply of Cherrios but it is important that they bring in a snack everyday. Please check your child's take home folder every night and take out their work, we have had some folders that are getting very full! Literacy We read 2 different versions of the book, The Mitten. We practiced retelling the story to our friends using Rotating Lines structure, compared and contrasted how they are alike and different, and now they can practice retelling it during playtime using felt boards to a friend. I introduced 2 new sight words: with, you. Our newest vowel is the short "o" and we are practicing reading it in simple CVC words and writing these words. Math We continue to work on developing fluency in addition and subtraction up to 5. Also looking at different ways to make number sentences.
We had our first parent volunteer helpers come in during math time to play some games with us! Thank you for coming and looking forward to our next day in February. Welcome back! I hope everyone had a wonderfully relaxing and enjoyable Winter Break and a Happy New Year! Well, we got right back into the swing of things here in the Tiger Classroom! A couple of reminders, please label snacks because we are having a hard time remembering where we put it on the shelf and since many people bring the same thing, we do not want to mix up snacks and eat someone else's snack. If you are interested in coming back in and reading to the class, please look at the sign up genius on the front of my website for the link and open dates. We so enjoy having someone come in and read to us.. Also, I am including the link to sign up to be a math helper if you are interested. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0F45AEAB2BABF58-parent Also, we have a new drop off procedure for our lunch boxes, and it is even more important that your child's lunch box has his/her name on it, if it were to get in the wrong wagon (there are 7 class wagons in the learning center to collect lunches from the upstairs classrooms) it would be hard to find their lunch. Thank you to those who sent and continue to send in items for our Maker Space carts, if you have any of the items from the attached flier and would like to donate them, please send it in with your child!
Literacy We are continuing to work on reading literature books during our Ready Gen time, the focus is on culture and so we read about a little girl who celebrates her birthday with her grandparents from 2 different cultures. We then began reading Apple Pie Fourth of July. I introduced 2 new sight words: that, are. We wrote a story about something we did during Winter Break and next week, will work on doing some revising and editing of this story. Math In Math, our January calendar is focusing on decomposing numbers and looking at all the different ways to show 3, 4, and 5. We are continuing to work on addition and subtraction number stories and developing fluency through 5. We also began working on measurement especially length. We compared different lengths of yarn to see which was longer, shorter or the same length. Then they had to try to cut a piece of yarn and see if it was longer, shorter or the same length as my necklace. These vocabulary words and concepts can be difficult to grasp, so we continue to work on them throughout the year. ScienceUpcoming Events December 11th-Early Release at 2 pm December 14th-Dessert Day December 21st-Winter Party December 22nd-January 6th-Winter Break What's Happening in the Tiger Classroom! It was wonderful to see so many families attending and presenting at our Cultural Fair! It was so fun to learn about some of the different cultures that our students share at Willow Grove. As a reminder it is very important to label your child's snow gear! We found a pair of black snowpants in the hallway without a name and are unable to find out who they belong to. The children do not always recognize their own clothing, so please help us by labeling their clothing! We are excited to announce Spirit Week the week leading into Winter Break! We think this will be a fun way to wrap up 2018 with the kids. Mon - Dec 17: Crazy hair day Tue - Dec 18: Wear your class color or represent your animal emoji day (Tiger class is wearing black for tigers) Wed - Dec 19: Spirit wear or purple or grey day Thur - Dec 20: PJ Day (there will be indoor recess) Fri - Dec 21: Winter party day Literacy We continue to work on narrative writing, this week we have been writing about Pip the penguin and if he visited our school and what he would do. I introduced 2 new sight words: of, it. We are continuing to work on short "i" in CVC words. We are beginning Unit 4 next week, so I am including it below.
Science In our Weather Unit, we looked at the types of weather we have had during the last couple of weeks. We had 5 days of snowy weather! We talked how weather can change from beginning of the day to end and how it changes from day to day.
Upcoming Events December 4 & 5th-MAP Testing December 6th-Cultural Arts Program 1:00 pm Cultural Fair 6-7:30 pm Scholastic Book Orders Due December 11th-Early Release at 2 pm December 14th-Dessert Day December 21st-Winter Party December 22nd-January 6th-Winter Break What's Happening in the Tiger Classroom! Well, what a way to start the week with a snow day! It looks like winter has arrived! Along with that means the additional need for outerwear! Several things to thing about when sending clothing for your child to wear outside is to label it! There are many similar looking items, especially snowpants and gloves/mittens! Also, transporting it to and from home is a challenge, having an extra bag for your child to store their snow gear is helpful, it keeps it out of their backpack (which get full with school stuff) and keeps wet clothing together. Finally, it is very important that your child can dress and undress themselves. There are 23 children in our class and as much as we are able to help, we can not dress/undress everyone. Please practice with your child about zipping his/her coat, putting on gloves/mittens, snowpants and boots! Thank you for your help with this endeavor, so that we are able to get to the playground for recess, make into the classroom to learn and on the bus at the end of the day in a timely manner. I hope everyone enjoyed the Thanksgiving Break, I was very thankful to have my sons home from college, if it was even for just a short visit! It was also wonderful to meet with everyone during Family Educator Conferences. Please feel free to contact me during the year, with any questions, concerns that you may have regarding your child's academic and social growth. Looking forward to the Cultural Fair this Thursday evening and hoping you are able to join us! Here is a letter from Mrs. Smith regarding this event. Dear families, We are excited to host the Willow Grove Cultural Fair for all families on the evening of December 6th, next Thursday, from 6:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m. Siblings are welcome to attend. Families may choose to wear traditional clothing from their country of origin or heritage. We hope to encourage our students to learn about other cultures, to celebrate what makes us all unique and to recognize cultural traits that we share. We couldn't do this without our parents and staff. THANK YOU to those who have volunteered! Activities include:
Literacy As we are in the 2nd trimester, we continue to work on blending and segmenting words. We are focusing on words with the short "i" sound. I introduced 2 new sight words: go, his. For our whole group reading we have been focusing on literature and reading The Snowy Day. We have been focusing on characters, setting, retelling the events and discussing how Peter's reaction changes throughout the story. Next week during purposeful play, the children will have the opportunity to use felt boards to retell this story and Come On, Rain! with their friends. We are writing narrative stories and working on completing a story about playing on the playground. Math We finished our November calendar using 2D and 3D shapes. We used a structure called Quiz, Quiz Trade, to work on naming and recognizing these shapes in the environment also. They really enjoyed this activity. We have also been working on telling addition and subtraction number stories and playing games that involving doubling numbers (2+2=, 3+3=) and comparing and contrasting towers of unifix cubes. Science We have been collecting data everyday on what the weather is like at Willow Grove. We also practiced being weather reporters and recorded a weather report on SeeSaw that I will be approving for you to enjoy watching.
Upcoming Events November 13th-Picture Retake Day November 16th-Dessert Day November 19th-Early Release at 2pm Family Educator Conferences 5-7pm November 20th-No School Family Educator Conferences 2-7pm November 21st-25th-Thanksgiving Break What's Happening in the Tiger Classroom! It is hard to believe that we are finished with one trimester of kindergarten! I am looking forward to meeting with everyone during our conference time. If you are unable to make it or need to change your time, please use the link below, email me or call the office. There are limited slots available and I want the opportunity to meet with everyone during this time. It is also very important to arrive on time, as the allotted time is short and I know we have a lot to discuss! Willow Grove Conference Sign-Up Link It is hard to believe that we all ready had snow! So let the fun begin with dressing and undressing for the beginning of our day, recess and the end of the day! I know that Mrs. Smith provided some helpful tips in the principal message about outerwear and the best way to manage it! I loved her idea about putting it in a different bag then their backpack for a couple of reasons: first their backpacks get so full and it makes it hard to put their take home folders, library books etc in them, after playing outside their snowpants, gloves/mittens are wet and then they put that in their backpack and then the things in their backpacks get wet (take home folders, library books). Also, if you would like to leave a pair of gym shoes in their cubby that is a great way to make sure they do not miss gym and we can keep the snow and slush out of our classroom and off the carpet and rug! Thank you for your help with this! Literacy We are completing our first trimester of literacy targets and opinion writing. I sent home the last 2 sight words introduced during this trimester: am, little. We will continue to work on short vowels and our next one we will concentrate on is the short "i". We also daily work on rhyming, syllables, identifying the beginning and ending sounds in words. Math As our November calendar continues to reveal 2D and 3D shapes we are comparing and contrasting them using a double bubble. The children are learning 2D shapes such as hexagon, trapezoid, rhombus along with circle, square, rectangle and triangle. 3D shapes such as cone, cube, cylinder and sphere. We are also looking for real world examples of them. Our number line and daily counting continue as does counting by 5's, 10's and counting from another number besides 1. Science We completed our unit on Pushes and Pulls! The children were video taped using Seesaw app demonstrating their slide. I will be sending you the information on how to access Seesaw this week, so that you can view the video and begin to see other pieces that they want to post and share with you. Thank you for your patience in getting this set up.

It has been a busy time and I have seen a lot of growth and progress in all the children, especially with regards to develop routines and using expected behaviors. Literacy We continue to work on sight words and this past week, I introduced 2 more words: is, we. We are also completing our Ready Gen books on Farming Then and Now and The Old Things. These books have been very helpful when comparing and contrasting long ago and current day. We are also writing our opinion stories about these books and stating our opinion on many other topics. With informational books, we have been discussing what the Main Topic is and learning the difference between main topic and important details or facts in books. We will continue to work on this throughout the year. Math We continue to work on counting. Our November calendar pattern will be helping us compare and contrast 2D and 3D shapes. We all ready talked about square and cube this past week. We stated that they both have squares, sides and corners but that a square is flat or 2D and a cube is a solid or 3D shape, a cube is made up of 6 squares and can hold items in it like a box! We are working on counting by 2's and doing some doubles addition (EX: 3+3, 4+4, 2+2 etc.) Science We are almost finished with our first unit, Pushes and Pulls! We had an investigation on how to create a safe slide. Everyone worked with a partner to create their slide, look for some pictures next week, in our photo gallery as this week we will end with a gallery walk to see all the slides and how they work! A great way to end our unit with a fun and educational investigation.

Also, please do not send any food or candy with your child to school, we are unable to pass it out to our students. We go outside for recess everyday weather permitting! Please make sure your child has appropriate outerwear (coat, hat, gloves/mittens), also as we try to get ready for recess, it is helpful if your child can zip his/her coat, so if he/she needs practice, please help them because self sufficient with getting on coats, zipping them up and putting on gloves/mittens. All help is greatly appreciated! If you have not signed up for our Family Educator Conference in November, please use the link below. I am very excited to share your child's progress with you! Willow Grove Conference Sign-Up Link Literacy We have been reading informational books about farming 100 years ago and current day! The children enjoyed comparing how the cows were milked, crops were harvested and sheep were sheared. Now we are reading The Old Things. It compares old things with newer things such as: typewriter and computer, camera with film and digital camera etc. The children are enjoying learning about how these old things were used. I shared with them that I used to write on a typewriter because there were no laptops when I was growing up. They all found that very funny! We also began writing opinion stories. This week, we wrote about which animal (polar bear or penguin) they like and why. This is there favorite type of writing! Math We are continuing our daily counting and our number line continues to grow! We made a patchwork patterned quilt with butterflies. I included a picture of it in our Photo Gallery!
