Literacy
We began our final unit in Ready Gen. The theme is Community. We began reading a book about Community Helpers. The children love this unit because they love talking and learning about all the people in their community (police officers, mail carrier, firefighters, nurses, doctors etc.). We will continue to work on many of our foundational skills including working on identifying short and long vowels in words. We continue to work on retelling stories several times a week. A couple of other targets we have been focusing on is reading 2 books that are similar and comparing/contrasting how different experiences from the stories. This works well with using different versions of books like: The Gingerbread Man, The Little Red Hen, The Three Little Pigs etc. For writing, we are continuing to work on Opinion Writing but also revisiting Informational Writing.
Math
We continue to work on addition and subtraction number stories and developing fluency (not using their fingers) in addition and subtraction to 5. We are pretty good with addition but often need to use fingers or other manipulatives for subtraction. This week as the month ends we will conclude our discussion on different measuring tools. The children enjoyed using these tools during purposeful play time.
